Portland is very fortunate to have a wonderful breakwater which is very popular for fishing, and during the whale season we often have Humpback Whales and Southern Right Whales swimming along the breakwater, so they can be just a few meters away!
If you are interested in Tuna fishing, or deep sea fishing, we have many charter boats, where you can book a day out on the sea.
Swimming is also very popular, we have Nuns Beach and the Henty Beach in town, and then we have Bridgewater Bay, which is approximately a 20min drive west of Portland. Bridgewater is a patrolled beach during the summer months through to Easter. There is also a café at Bridgewater, where you can enjoy morning or afternoon tea, or lunch or dinner, depending on your mood. Bridgewater is also very popular with whales, and we have a colony of seals on the Cape. If you would like to see the Seals you can do a boat trip with Seals by Sea, or you can walk to the top of the cape to a viewing platform. About 5 minutes further on from Bridgewater is the Blow Holes, and the Petrified Forest.
Portland’s Cable Tram links the Portland Botanic Gardens, Portland Maritime Discovery Centre, Powerhouse Vintage Car Museum, WWII Memorial Lookout Tower and our own Cable Tram Museum, whilst providing a scenic ride along the picturesque Portland Bay foreshore.
The tram runs seven days a week, between 10am-4pm in summer and 10am-3pm in winter. Tickets can be used to travel all day, and visitors can get on and off as they please at any of the 5 stops along the way.
